What If: Reading Hour with Charlotte

It was important to me that this space dipped its toe in both casual and formal elements. It seemed to me that this house is a bit more formal but cheeky (cheeky in a brutalist sort of way). That mentality seemed important functionally but also symbolically with the inclusion of the Nuage by Charlotte Perriand. Overall this mix seems to be teetering on something and I can’t put my finger on it. Maybe it’s the dangerously framed art paired with a rug made for a literal Rockefeller. Tension is key, I suppose.

I move around a lot when I read; up, down, sideways, floorways hence, seating options. I love these linen pillows that can be rumpled up and become even lovelier. We all know they won’t stay on the sofa. Alternatively, I love having the option to read in a slipper chair. That sounds like a very design-y thing to say but there is something about sitting cross legged in a slipper chair with magazines everywhere. The settee is tidy which I somewhat prefer in this case. The lighting is soft.

Perhaps more to say but maybe I’ll just let you settle in.

The What If:

There are quite a few “What Ifs” in this space but the star is the modular Nuage by Charlotte Perriand. When I started diving into this beloved design further I had no idea how much controversy surrounded the design’s credit. On top of that, the design itself did not have immediate success.

"Undoubtedly too far ahead of her time, Charlotte Perriand did not realize that the public was not yet ready for so much freedom."

Same girl, same.

Parting thought

When starting to design this space, I saw this lovely stained glass which led me to remember the Nuage.

If anyone knows the credit for this image/design, please let me know.
