Pickin’ and Musing: May

I spent this month doing the rounds. I have favorite local vintage and antique stores that I like to visit every few months to see what’s new and get inspiration. These are my first stops; Find Furnish (below), Loft Antiques, Haus Theory, Missouri Mouse, Staples Mill, Midtown Antique Mall, H&B gallery and so many more…

There were quite a few amazing furniture pieces that got away. Lord knows that I shouldn’t and just can’t store another piece of furniture in my basement.

I usually find myself asking, “But who would this be for?” or “Where would this go?”. it’s not about just owning a cool piece of furniture. I enjoy attaching stuff to people or uses. Even if that use is sheer enjoyment. It’s not necessarily about being materialistic but rather attaching a thing to a memory or moment in time or stage of your life.

Who is it for?

I think the first person that really made me realize that I design or even just consume this way was Beata Heuman. She articulates this thinking so well in her beautiful book, ‘Every Room Should Sing’.

This is so beautifully illustrated at estate sales. To me, estate sales are less about getting a deal and more about seeing how people live. It’s a privilege to get a peek into someone’s life - whether it’s an estate sale or a bathroom remodel. The “Who is it for?” is so important to me.

Parting Thought:

This month we enjoyed a little “sew and sauna” evening with our dear friends. I was mostly distracted by snuggling their cute babies. Next time I’ll get behind the machine.
